Ex-Professional cyclist Matt Stephens talks to Dr James Morton, the Head of Nutrition at Team Sky to discuss how diet is used in combination with training and racing so that riders can lose weight. This can give cyclists a higher power to weight ratio, the holy grail in cycling!

Dr Morton explains how riders fuel for the days they really need it, and then under-fuel on days where it is possible to do so.

Methods of weight loss have been discussed for decades. In this video, high protein and restriction of carbohydrates is the method Dr Morton talks about. Combined with sports nutrition products provided by Team Sky sponsor, Science In Sport.

Two key bits of advice for losing weight from Dr James Morton are
– Slow and gradual, no more than 1kg per week.
– More protein than usual, and less carbohydrates than usual.
If you have a big day on the bike it’s important to fuel sufficiently for it, but if you don’t. Don’t overload with fuel.
